Announcing the Michelle Knovic Smith Education Technology Internship

By: Darren Milligan, Smithsonian Office of Educational Technology

The Smithsonian Office of Educational Technology (OET), the team who manages the Smithsonian Learning Lab, is pleased to offer our first-ever paid internship. This summer, we seek an undergraduate or graduate student to work with the OET team as we use technology to connect the Smithsonian with classrooms across the country!

Michelle Knovic Smith (1950–2021), as an educator, mentor, and leader, in her more than three decades at the Smithsonian, pioneered innovative and effective approaches to the Smithsonian's mission of the “diffusion of knowledge.” The Michelle Knovic Smith Education Technology Internship (MSK EdTech Internship) exists to honor this legacy. It provides a paid summer internship for one student interested in education, technology, and museum outreach to work alongside and learn with our team.

OET’s mission is to deepen, enrich, and personalize learning by encouraging and supporting the creative use of museum resources through research and collaboration with education partners. Interns will participate in all aspects of this work, including serving the Smithsonian community and the nation's classroom educators to increase cooperation, skills, and agility in using digital resources for educational purposes through guidance, assistance, and training. They will also work with museum educators and technologists to support and evolve the Webby Award-winning Smithsonian Learning Lab software platform. Since the Learning Lab launched in 2016, museum and classroom educators have used its free tools to create tens of thousands of learning experiences—“collections”—using Smithsonian resources for teaching and learning. The Learning Lab includes over 6.2 million resources, has served more than four million people, and has over 140,000 registered users.

The 2023 MSK EdTech Internship intern will be involved in ongoing research projects with OET to inform the redesign of the Learning Lab. Learning Lab 2.0 will make its resources and collections more readily discoverable and usable by PK–12 educators from various disciplines.

But don’t delay. The application deadline for the Summer 2023 program is February 15!
